Hey Volley-
I was somewhat intimidated to work on my '95 when I first bought it--I didn't want to screw something up. However, once I dumped it and it got damaged, I needed to rebuild it. That actually worked out very well for me because it forced me to roll up my sleeves and mess with the bike. I'm *not* saying that one must dump there bike to feel comfortable working on it. What I'm saying is that I felt that I couldn't really mess it up any worse after the damage!
Don't worry about getting into the bike. It's a simple design. The Clymer manual will be important, as well as a little creativity. There are very few aftermarket products available for the Savage. The ones available are ususally expensive. So you have to "invent" many of your own modifications. That truly makes these bikes uniquely customized, one-of-a-kind rides.
I've done very little on the engine (oil changes, plug changes, etc.), but I have been working on the looks over the past year. I've done most of that work inexpensively too. I figure when the engine needs attention I'll tear it down. For now, frequent oil changes are my plan!
Check out my web site TIPS & HOW-TOS page to see what I've done. I'm really happy so far with the changes.
Keep us posted on your bike...
